Welcome to the
Iowa County Humane Society!

The Iowa County Humane Society (ICHS) is a non-profit, no kill shelter. We run 100% on donations. Please consider a donation to help us continue to help animals.

Thank you!

We have about 40 cats and kittens at ICHS and many more will be rolling in soon with "kitten season". The number of dogs is also on the rise. Donations are slow and resources are critically tight. So, please consider DONATING or ADOPTING today!

Mayhem to Manners Tricks Class 1: Enrolling Now!

We are excited to announce that we will be hosting a Mayhem to Manners Tricks 1 Class beginning Tuesday, May 22nd at 6pm. This is a 5 class session (May 22nd, 29th, June 5th, 12th, 19th, 2018). The cost is $100 per dog. Please register and pay at the Iowa County Humane Society during normal business hours- class size is very limited, so don't wait! Official enrollment in a class will not be assured until tuition is received. Fees are non-refundable.

Tricks 1
Our Tricks 1 class starts with teaching the basics on gaining focus through lure and reward. You will learn how to teach your dog many traditional tricks, like shake, sit pretty, and play dead. But you will also learn how to teach your furry friend other silly antics like, fix your hair, take a bow, and wave bye-bye. Once your dog is has a solid foundation, you will have the option to make some tricks more “flashy” by adding distance, duration, and distraction to their tricks. This makes tricks like “play dead” all that much more entertaining.

Requirements for the class:
• Dog must have a solid sit and down stay as well as good manners around moderate levels of distractions, like other dogs and children. If it seems the environment is overwhelming for the dog and the dog becomes too disruptive during class, you may be asked to leave.
• No human or dog reactive/aggressive dogs will be allowed.
• Solo handlers must be 18 years of age or older. Handlers under 18 must have an adult present. Families that want to have children engaged are welcome, but must have a second adult present to supervise children under 8 years old.
• All dogs must be current on vaccinations and free of parasites before attending class.

What to bring for class:
• Please bring your dog in under control on a 4 to 6 foot leash and your preferred collar/training material. No flexi leashes allowed.
• A large amount of pea sized, high value treats. We will be giving many rewards during the tricks class, so bringing too many is better than not bringing enough. It may be a good idea to bring 2-3 options if you have a picky eater.
• An easily accessible treat pouch.
• A towel or a pad for your knees is suggested for your comfort since we will be teaching some tricks that are required to be on the floor.
• A hungry dog. It may be advantageous for some to withhold the dog’s dinner before class. If your dog isn’t super food motivated or isn’t interested in treats around distractions, an empty stomach may create more willingness to focus. We suggest bringing their meal to use as their reward during class instead. This may not be necessary for all dogs.

Classes will be held in the training facility at the Iowa County Humane Society. It is a good idea to arrive 10 minutes early to bathroom your dog and get settled in as class starts on-time.

100% of proceeds will go to the Iowa County Humane Society!
